Renting out an old machiya townhouse like Koke-an offers a private, atmospheric and at times affordable alternative to staying in a hotel, and can be a great option for families or anyone traveling in a group. In Koke-an’s case, the combination of two connected old buildings tucked down a quite side alley means it can sleep 4 to 6 people. And even though it is a peaceful location, complete with a very small mossy garden from which the house takes its name (koke means moss), its location on the corner of Sanjo-dori puts it just two minutes from the subway system. Depending on the season, Koke-an costs ¥22,000 to ¥28,000 per night for a group of 3–4 people, with each additional person costing ¥2,000 extra, while the full kitchen can also help cut costs by self-catering. Matsubaya Ryokan

The Matsubaya is traditional accommodation striped of the frills to provide a ryokan experience for travelers on a budget. Unlike most ryokan, there is no communal onsen (bath) and no dinners are served here, but the rooms have everything ryokan fans would expect—tatami mat flooring, sliding screen doors, and futon at night. Also unlike most ryokan, singles start at a bargain ¥4,400 and twins from ¥8,100. The ryokan’s largest rooms (¥33,000) will sleep five people, making it a good choice for families, too. And the location is also not to be sniffed at, being just a ten-minute walk from JR Kyoto Station and five minutes from Gojo subway Station.
